Want to learn more about Taiko? Come to the Great Lakes Taiko Center in Novi, Michigan, for a fun and free introduction to Taiko Drumming: You'll get a quick overview about different kinds of taiko drums, how to play the taiko, and some basic rhythms. By the end of class, we will play a short song together! Children & families are welcome.

What is taiko drumming? Japanese Taiko drumming combines music, communication skills, teamwork and a touch of martial arts to create a fun and unique art form. Check out our taiko videos on YouTube!

Do I need to read music? No, it is not required. Our instructors teach in such a way that musicians and non-musicians alike can enjoy playing music together in a group.

Are there any age limits? We offer classes for almost every age, from 3 to 103, including options for Pre-schoolers, Youth, and Adult classes.

Learn the art of "Japanese Taiko Drumming" this Winter & Spring 2019 on WEDNESDAYS

Ann Arbor Rec & Ed classes @Eberbach Cultural Arts Bldg (1220 S. Forest, Ann Arbor, MI 48104)

Taiko drumming combines music, communication and teamwork, and a touch of dance and martial arts, to create a uniquely dynamic art form. Experience the joy of taiko with us in these fun classes! The INTRO Class introduces new players to the basic form, movement, and rhythms of taiko drumming, and our CONTINUING Class reinforces fundamentals and continues to develop concepts through creative play and musical exploration. Instructors: Eileen Ho and Larry An, teachers and performing group members from the Great Lakes Taiko Center. Ages 16+

INTRO TAIKO CLASS (WED 7-8PM) - New students and previous Intro students welcome!

Spring Section 1: 4/17, 4/24, 5/1, 5/8
Spring Section 2: 5/15, 5/22, 5/29, 6/5

Fee: $79 per section (students may enroll in either one or both 4 week sections) + $10 for bachi sticks

CONTINUING TAIKO CLASS (WED 8-9:15PM) - Students should have completed an Intro Class or permission of instructor.

Our GLTC Youth and Adult students share in the joy of playing taiko throughout the year in classes which begin in the Fall with a Holiday Party and mini-recital in December, continue in Winter & Spring, and culminate with a celebratory recital concert in June. Taiko opportunities in the summer include continuing taiko classes, specialty courses for small and big drum playing techniques, and youth summer camps.

  • The 2019 recital date is SUN June 9th at The Berman Center for the Performing Arts.
  • Tuition is collected on the 15th of each month.

  • Registration is open for the following Adult & Youth classes at GLTC:

    MATSURI (Beginner/Intermediate) SUN 2:30-4PM Learn the song “Matsuri” meaning festival, an especially popular piece among North American taiko groups. New concepts and techniques of Naname/Slant-style, Odaiko and Shime Daiko playing will be introduced and practiced. We will also work on solo composition and improvisational playing. Instructors: Eileen Ho & Larry An

    DREAM (Intermediate) MON 7:15-8:30PM / SAT 9-10:15AM Continue your taiko "Dream" with this fun and festive piece. You will continue to refine and reinforce basic concepts of proper form, stance, basic rhythms and playing techniques. There will be opportunities to focus on Shime daiko or Odaiko playing as well as Nagado. At least one year of taiko classes recommended.

    TOMOE - Odaiko + Shime (Advanced) TUE 7:15-8:45PM "Tomoe" is a piece for Odaiko and shime daiko. Class will focus on developing techniques for these two styles of drumming. All students will be expected to play both shime daiko and Odaiko, and to compose an odaiko solo. Recommended for self-directed, advanced students. Instructor: Brian Sole

    POUNDING HOOVES (Advanced) SUN 4:30-6PM Learn the song "Pounding Hooves" by Rick Shiomi. Fundamental rhythms and techniques will continue to be developed on various drums. New concepts and techniques of Naname/Slant-style and multi-drum playing along with various accompanying percussion instruments will be introduced and explored. We will also work on solo composition and improvisational playing. Instructors: Eileen Ho & Larry An


    TINY TOTS TAIKO (ages 3-6) MON or WED 4:30-5:00PM  Pre-school and Kindergarten students enjoy learning about working together as a group, counting, following directions, and taiko drumming through fun activities, songs and games. Students will learn a short performance piece to showcase on stage at the June Recital.

    YOUTH TAIKO (Intro/Beginner) TUE 5:00-6:00PM Students (ages 6 ~ 11) learn the basics of Taiko drumming through fun drills, games, and an original composition which students learn and perform on the stage at our June recital.

    YOUTH TAIKO (Homeschoolers) MON 1:00-2:00PM. Homeschoolers (ages 6~14) learn the basics of Taiko drumming together in this daytime class. NOTE: We are also a Community Resource Partner offering our homeschool taiko drumming class through the Center Line Partnership program of Center Line Public Schools.     YOUTH TAIKO (Intermediate) MON 5:15-6:15PM Students (ages 8 ~ 12) with some previous taiko experience will be challenged to hone and improve their taiko playing. In addition to foundational concepts and skills, songs with multiple parts, advanced rhythms and drum-specific skills will be included. 



    We are also happy to offer our GLTC community the opportunity to take Hula Class and TaikoFit Cardio Drumming which are open to current taiko students as well as the general public.  


    Hula and Tahitian Dance Class (at Main Studio in Novi)


    Open to new and continuing Hula students. Learn fundamental Hula dance elements and accompanying songs and rhythms in the context of various dance forms and musical instruments such as the ipu (a traditional gourd drum) or bamboo pu'ili sticks. Students will also explore Hawaiian history, culture and language relevant to the Hula arts, such as learning the meaning behind the mele (song or chant) of a dance. Tahitian dance will also be explored. Instructors: Molly Eguchi & Angie Dewey. 2019 Class Schedule: Saturdays 10:30AM-1:30PM for about 2 sessions per month from January to June (see GLTC Classes Calendar below for dates starting Jan. 5th).     TaikoFit Cardio Drumming: a fun fitness class for everyone! 

    Have fun and work up a sweat while moving to the music and beating the drums! TaikoFit Cardio Drumming classes are all about having a good time while you exercise. Instructors from the Great Lakes Taiko Center will guide your through dynamic routines with upbeat music and varying intensity options of movement and rhythm. No previous experience required. TaikoFit takes cardio drumming to the next level with added excitement and power of the booming Taiko Drums and a more intense workout from using the sturdy bachi sticks. Drums and sticks are provided.

    In the Lake Orion area? Check out our TaikoFit sessions at the Orion Center. Classes taught by GLTC TaikoFit instructor Cindi Carter.
